STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAMME (SPP)

One of the major objectives of the Council has been to improve the quality of education in our colleges and in view of this the Student Project Programme (SPP) was started during 1978–79 to sponsor engineering student projects. This innovative program has been playing a very important role in engineering education for last forty two years and has become a flagship program of the Council. Innovation and technology are needed to transform our nation from reliance on exploitation of natural resources which are non-renewable and finite to technological innovation as basis for sustainable and all round development. Recognizing this need, the Council initiated the Student Project Program, popularly known as SPP, as early as 1977. The main purpose of this program is to bring out the hidden talent and innovative spirit of young engineers graduating from colleges across the State. Under this program, the Council has been providing both technical and financial support to selected projects undertaken by the final year students of science and engineering colleges across the State. Thus the Council has been playing a crucial role in building confidence and enhancing the capabilities of engineers graduating from the colleges in the State. So far KSCST has conducted 42 series of events in the SPP, since its inception supporting more than 10,300 projects for the engineering and science students.

Many projects, sponsored in this program, deal with technology applications which are relevant to the State. This process has been ably assisted by more than hundred faculty members of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) and experts from various other research institutions and government departments. The Student Project Program of KSCST has attracted the attention of various incubation centers of engineering colleges, educationists and technologists in the country.

The work discipline acquired by students in evolving and executing their projects, improves their analytical method and technical capabilities enabling better performance as professionals. The sponsorship, by Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology, has become a benchmark of quality for engineering student projects and these projects have been recognized and valued by both academic and industrial communities.

In this program, several completed projects have also been identified as promising and having commercial potential. Concerned faculty/students of such projects are encouraged to go ahead for further modification wherever required and to take-up field trials or for scaling up. Projects have always been diverse, reflecting the varied interests of the students/guides and some of them are found to be very innovative.

42nd Series of Student Project Programme (SPP):

Under the 42nd series of SPP, the Council had invited project proposals from final year students of engineering colleges across the State. As per the recommendations of the experts committee, project proposals were invited under three different streams, namely Stream A, Stream B and Stream C.

Stream A: Under this stream, the projects were invited as an further improvement/development work of projects awarded as the "Best Project of the Year" in the previous series of SPP.

Stream B: Under this stream, the experts committee had given specific problem statements on which the project proposals were invited. The problem statement are as follows :

1. Remote controlled rolling display synchronized with traffic lights
2. Real-time power controller
3. Serial data logger with remote data access
4. Android based mobile phone to work as a hearing aid for the hearing disabled
5. A camera based power-line inspection system for BESCOM workers
6. Development of the Energy Management System (EMS) for using the Solar PV power without battery bank for smart grid and livelihood applications
7. Device to alert and prevent theft of sandal wood trees in forest area
8. Automatic detection of violent incidents from video footage of CCTV cameras
9. Smart trash can which can detect plastic bottle deposited and collect data on dashboard
10. Machine Learning powered AI chat bot for tracking mental health
11. Convert Waste plastic to 3D printing raw material
12. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology
13. Biological signal processing for workload assessments & sleep studies
14. Technology for elderly people & differently abled persons
15. Large area surveillance system
16. Developing condition monitoring techniques
17. Self-powered electronics system for emergency conditions like a flood, war, earthquake etc.
18. GPS based system for understanding traffic monitoring in cosmopolitan cities
19. Developing science models for high school students
20. Bio-energy devices
21. Drone applications

Stream C : Under stream C, projects were invited from all the disciplines of engineering covering following broad themes recommended by the experts committee.

1. Health
2. Energy
3. Education
4. Ecology and Environment
5. Automobile
6. Agriculture
7. Water
8. Life Sciences
9. Waste management
10. Infrastructure, etc.

With these broad themes and categories, the Council had received 3605 project proposals from various disciplines from over 160 engineering colleges in the State. These project proposals were scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science, Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) and other institutions and have approved 700 project proposals from 142 engineering colleges under this 42nd Series of SPP with a grant support of Rs. 47,66,500.

Further, the selected projects were invited to the nodal centers for the midterm evaluations conducted across 10 engineering colleges identified by the Council.

Nodal Centre Evaluation :

Having selected 700 projects for sponsorship, Council had conducted midterm evaluation of the selected projects to track the progress made by students with the project work. During this evaluation, students interacted with the experts for midcourse correction. The Council had identified 10 engineering colleges of 10 regions across the state to conduct this evaluation.

Tumakuru Region :

In this region a total of 24 projects of 8 branches of 6 engineering colleges of Tumakuru district were exhibited for the evaluation. Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumakuru had hosted this evaluation in their campus on 9th May 2019. Out of 24 projects, experts selected 14 projects out of which 9 project under exhibition and 5 projects under seminar have been selected.
