STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAMME (SPP) In order to improve the quality of engineering education, the Council embarked upon a major venture - the Student Project Programme (SPP) - to select good student projects in various disciplines from various engineering colleges, fund them and provide technical support. The Student Project Programme is one of the important programmes of the KSCST; it involves students and faculty of engineering colleges in taking up projects oriented towards developmental problems of the state and coming out with practical solutions, more specifically, those relevant to rural areas. The Student Project Programme (SPP) was initiated during 1977-78 and has undergone substantial qualitative and quantitative improvements over the last three decades. The Student Project Programme has, by now, stimulated a large number of students and faculty to think about the problems of their immediate surroundings and to use their knowledge and training to improve their environment. This process has been ably assisted by more than one hundred faculty members of the Indian Institute of Science and experts from various other research institutions and government departments. Engineering colleges of the State have shown keen interest in this novel programme. The Student Project Programme of KSCST has attracted the attention of educationists and technologists in the entire country. The objectives are:
The work discipline acquired by students in evolving and executing their projects, improves their analytical and technical capabilities and methodology, enabling better performance at job interviews, besides getting a formal certificate of recognition. The sponsorship, by Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology, has become a benchmark of quality for engineering student projects and these projects have been highly valued by both academic and industrial communities. In this programme, several completed projects are identified as promising and having commercial potential. Concerned faculty/students of such projects are encouraged to go ahead for further modification wherever required and to takeup field trials or scale up. Projects have been diverse, reflecting the varied interests of the students/guides and some of them have been very innovative. The recent enhancement of financial support by the state government has enabled us to support several such innovative projects and some of these projects have received wide publicity in local as well as national media. 38th Series of Student Project Programme (SPP) : SPP, when started in the year 1977-78, supported 81 projects, from 13 institutions. Now, during the 38th Series (2014-2015) of this program, the Council received 1630 project proposals from various disciplines from over 130 engineering colleges in the State. These project proposals are scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science, NAL and other institutions and has approved 459 project proposals under this 38th Series of SPP with a total grant support of Rs. 25.84 Lakhs. So far, over 7500 projects have been supported by the KSCST under this programme during last 38 years. The activities of 38th Series of SPP started in October 2014. The Council contacted experts from Indian Institute of Science and various R&D institutions in identifying thrust areas for selection of student projects. As per the recommendations of the subject experts and approval by Secretary, KSCST, SPP poster was printed in A3 size which displayed information about the thrust areas for this series. Following are thrust areas recommended by the experts for student projects.
SPP poster contains, in addition to thrust areas, format of the proposal and other relevant details. Posters were sent to all the engineering colleges of the State and Universities, indicating last date for submission of the project proposals. The Council received 1630 project proposals (Annexure 1) from various disciplines from over 130 institutions in the State. These proposals were scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science and other R&D institutions. After rigorous processing of the project proposals and evaluation by experts, 459 proposals from 113 engineering colleges were supported and sponsored with a total financial assistance of about Rs. 25.84 Lakhs. Project sanction letters and budget sanction details were sent to the concerned project guides and Principals of the engineering colleges.
KSCST has organized nodal centre evaluation of the supported
projects at following engineering colleges namely :
Experts during evaluation had reviewed the methodology and the interim output of the projects. The students had demonstrated their progress at the nodal centres. A total of 218 projects were selected for Seminar and Exhibition from 94 Engineering colleges in the state. The SPP Co-ordinator and Principal of respective engineering colleges have been informed about the selection of the projects for Exhibition/Seminar from their institutions. The details of projects selected for Seminar and Exhibition branch wise is as follows:
SPP - Biofuel / Bioenergy SPP projects Council and Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board (KSBDB) are jointly supporting Engineering, M. Tech, M.Sc., and MBA students to take up research projects in the Biofuel / Bioenergy area. Under the 38th Series of Student Project Programme, KSCST & KSBDB, had sent a poster consisting of thrust areas for students to take up project. KSCST received 116 student project proposals (65 BE projects, 22 M.Tech projects, 21 M.Sc., projects and 8 MBA projects) from various colleges across the state under SPP Biofuel / Bioenergy area. These project proposals were evaluated by the experts and they have given their opinion for sponsorship / rejection on each of the projects. 59 projects (31 BE projects - Rs. 3,19,000/-, 8 M.Tech projects - Rs. 56,000/-, 15 M.Sc., projects - Rs. 1,36,000/- and 5 MBA projects - Rs. 46,000/-) totaling to Rs. 5,57,000/- (Rupees Five Lakhs Fifty Seven Thousand). The Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, Government of Karnataka has approved and released an amount of Rs. 13.95 Lakhs to the Council for this activity. The Council organised the 38th Series Seminar and Exhibition on 20st and 21st August 2015, at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mangalore. The programme is being inaugurated on 20th August 2015 at 10.00 AM by Prof. Jayant M. Modak, Deputy Director, Indian Institute of Science. Dr. H. Maheshappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi - Chief Guest of the function releaseded the SPP Engineering Compendium and Compact Disc and addressed the gathering.
